Time for Play
Structured and unstructured play time are integrated into the learning experience as part of an emergent, interdisciplinary curriculum.
Flexible Enrollment Options
We offer both a full time program and homeschool classes so families can find the enrollment pathway that works best for them.
Regular Field Trips
We take field trips to local areas of interest once a month. Some of the places we’ve visited include Colvin Run Mill, the U.S. Botanical Garden, Hidden Pond Nature Center and the Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum.
Personalized Approach
Our Montessori-inspired approach to math and reading allows students to move through the material at their own pace. Interdisciplinary units in science and social studies create space for student interests.
Mixed-Age Classroom
Core content is delivered in a mixed-age setting with competency being the key factor for grouping and academic progression.
Interdisciplinary Curriculum
We tie concepts together in thematic units. An integrated science and social studies curriculum allows students to see connections across the content areas.
Community Partnerships
We partner with local organizations like Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture and Rock of Ages Music (ROAM) to provide specialized learning experiences for our students.

Feels Like Home
ALC is excited to announce the launch of our full time academic program!
In the interest of making our program accessible to more families, we are expanding our offerings to include an option for those who are not homeschooling. This five day a week program marks the transition of ALC into an independent school. Space for new students will be available in fall 2026.
While we are growing in a new direction, we are staying true to our roots. We will continue offering our cooperative program of field trips and enrichment classes to homeschool families.
